I downloaded SophieSew in May of 2016. It is version 1.3. It locks the export file so I can not use it to stitch out my work. How do I rectify this problem?

You've probably not doing something as it should because I've checked website and the software and the Export function is enabled and ready to use. For applications like this one you will have to meet some requirements for your drawing/stitch in order for the Export function to work properly.
In the Help documentation, there is a Search function. Input Export and check the available topics. There is one called Export Embroidery Design. You gave all the information you need in that section.
The only manual that is available for this application is related to the HELP file that is found in the installation directory after you install it. The file is known as: SophieSewHelp.chm. Double click the file and it will load using the Windows Helper module. Use the tree menu on the left to browse through the help topics.
